Could former Wolverine return to Michigan football?

There is no such thing as too much depth. That’s why as rumblings surface about a possible return from former Michigan football linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green, I’d view it as a positive.

Hill-Green played 13 games for the Wolverines in the 2021 season and was credited with 50 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one pass defense. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder missed the 2022 season due to injury and then transferred to Charlotte to follow former Michigan football assistant Biff Poggi.

Thoughts on return for former Michigan football linebacker

Hill-Green played in 11 games last season and finished with 73 tackles. He was also credited with nine tackles for loss and two sacks, plus a forced fumble and three pass breakups. Hill-Green entered the transfer portal again this offseason and was supposed to go to UCF but backed off that commitment.

So he’s available and has been working out in Ann Arbor according to Chris Balas of The Wolverine. Hill-Green was a third-team American Athletic Conference selection. Yet, it does sound like he dropped on the depth chart after battling more injuries, which is why he transferred.

Michigan football would make sense as a landing spot. The Wolverines are pretty solid at linebacker, but more dpeth is always needed. It sounds like there could be some stuff to figure out on the admissions side of things. I also wonder if this is a situation where the Wolverines could offer NIL in place of a scholarship. That was done last season and other programs do it too.

At any rate, Hill-Green is a name to watch in the spring transfer window for Michigan football. Jaishawn Barham and Ernest Hausmann are going to start, but in the Big Ten, you can never scoff at quality depth and Hill-Green would provide it.
