Cubs Rookies Lead Organization All-Stars
Lily Smith/The Register / USA TODAY NETWORK

Three of the Chicago Cubs’ Organization All-Stars for 2023 — outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and pitchers Jordan Wicks and Luke Little — have already appeared in the Major Leagues, a demonstration of the Cubs’ coming youth movement.

In all, nine Cubs Top 30 prospects were named as part of the organization’s All-Stars, as determined by MiLB.com.

The site put together an All-Star team for each organization, regardless of where they are in the Cubs’ system.

But Crow-Armstrong, Wicks and Little stuck out.

The Cubs called up Crow-Armstrong up in September. The Cubs’ No. 1 prospect and MLB’s No. 12 overall prospect batted .283 with 20 home runs and 82 RBI with Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa before his call-up. He has a reputation as one of the best defensive prospects in baseball and projects as the Cubs’ future center fielder.

Wicks earned a call-up due to Marcus Stroman’s extended stint on the injured list. The No. 10 prospect was selected as the left-handed starter for the team, as he went 7-0 with a 3.55 ERA with Tennessee and Iowa before his call-up. He has an inside track to a starting rotation spot for Opening Day next March.

Little, the Cubs’ No. 25 prospect and the All-Star team’s relief pitcher, went 5-2 with a 2.12 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 63.2 innings in the minors. His ERA was best among all Cubs prospects with at least 30 innings and the Cubs called him up as a reliever in September.

The right-handed pitcher selected was No. 2 prospect Cade Horton, who is also baseball’s No. 29 prospect. He was a finalist for MiLB Pitching Prospect of the Year after he went 4-4 with a 2.65 ERA with 117 strikeouts in 88.1 innings. He pitched in Tennessee’s title-clinching win.

Two other prospects in MLB’s Top 100 also made the team. Outfielder Owen Caissie is the Cubs’ No. 3 prospect and MLB’s No. 64 prospect and played all season at Tennessee, where he batted .289 with 22 home runs and 84 RBI. He was named the Cubs’ Hitting Prospect of the Year and played with Canada in the World Baseball Classic.

Second baseman selection Matt Shaw is the Cubs’ No. 6 prospect and No. 96 MLB prospect. He batted .357 with eight home runs and 28 RBI after the Cubs took him in the first round out of Maryland as he reached Tennessee and played with the Smokies during their title push.

Other Cubs Top 30 prospects that made the team included catcher Moises Ballesteros (No. 7, .285, 14 home runs, 64 RBI), first baseman Haydn McGeary (No. 17, .275, 19 home runs, 88 RBI) and third baseman BJ Murray Jr. (No. 18, .263, 16 home runs, 74 RBI).

The other Cubs prospects named to the All-Stars were shortstop Luis Vazquez (.271, 20 home runs, 80 RBI) and outfielder Yonathan Perlaza (.284, 23 home runs, 85 RBI).
