Pirates’ minor league affiliates played four games on Friday night, winning just one as tough bounces and even tougher breaks didn’t go their way.
Triple-A Indianapolis was the lone team to notch a win, taking care of business with a balanced 7-2 win over the St. Paul Twins, thanks in large part to strong nights from usual suspects Nick Gonzales and Malcom Nuñez.
The Altoona Curve lost 5-4 in the tenth inning on a walk-off single, while J.P. Massey didn’t make it out of the first inning for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, tagged for four runs—none earned—after an error with two outs precipitated a nightmarish outing. Greensboro still managed to make a game of it, but couldn’t overcome the poor start in a 5-3 loss to the Hickory Crawdads.
The Bradenton Marauders saw another excellent start from WVU product Carlson Reed, but their anemic offense couldn’t capitalize in the 4-1 decision. Here’s a look at the top performances from Pirates’ prospects on Friday.
