More Buzz Is Connecting The New York Jets To Ezekiel Elliott

The New York Jets could use some depth in their backfield, and Ralph Ventre of Jets Country believes that Ezekiel Elliott may be the best remaining option for them.

Elliott spent the 2023 campaign with the New England Patriots, playing in every game and rushing for 642 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 3.5 yards per carry. He also caught 51 passes for 313 yards and a couple of scores.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the fourth overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He spent the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys, making three Pro Bowls while earning a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections. He also led the league in rushing twice, topping out at 1,631 yards during his rookie season.

Elliott posted four 1,000-yard campaigns and also registered four double-digit touchdown seasons in Dallas, but toward the end of his tenure with the club, his efficiency began to dip.

In his final season with the Cowboys in 2022, Elliott totaled 876 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground, but logged just 3.8 yards per attempt.

While Elliott is obviously far from the player he once was, the Jets certainly wouldn’t be asking too much of him in 2024.

They would merely use him as a backup to Breece Hall, who has emerged as New York’s clear No. 1 back. Gang Green doesn’t have much talent behind Hall at the moment, as Israel Abanikanda is currently slotted in the No. 2 hole in spite of rushing for just 70 yards in 2023.

Ezekiel Elliott would definitely be a nice pickup for the Jets to give Hall a breather and also to use in short-yardage situations. Plus, he is still a fine pass-catcher out of the backfield.
